Abstract: The tone reservation method can be used to reduce the peak to average power ratio (PAPR) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission systems. In this paper, the tone reservation method is analyzed for OFDM with a restricted carrier set, where only the positive carrier frequencies are used.
The approach incurs only limited computational cost and can therefore be regarded as a PAR reduction solution in practical OFDM and uplink OFDMA systems [9]. II. SYSTEM MODEL AND THE TONE RESERVATION METHODConsider a complex-baseband OFDM system with N subcarriers indexed by k = 0, 1, . . . , N − 1, see, e.g., [6,7].
For an OFDM symbol that consists of unused subcarriers, pilot and data subcarriers, we can utilize phase information of the pilot tones together with a certain number of unused subcarriers to reduce the PAPR of the OFDM symbol. The tone reservation (TR) technique makes use of some reserved or unused subcarriers and insert dummy symbols that can High peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) leads to out-of-band power and in-band distortion in the direct current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) systems. In contrast to previous methods, the new active-set method proposed here converges very quickly toward a minimum-PAR solution at a lower computational cost. Common to all DMT/OFDM systems is a large peak-to-average ratio (PAR), which can lead to low power efficiency and nonlinear distortion. Tone reservation uses unused or reserved tones to design a peak-canceling signal to lower the PAR of a transmit block.
Consequently, such algorithms entail high levels of computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive-scaling tone reservation algorithm.
